Red oak carries tannin that stains any water-based primer brown, which is why our first coat on oak is always shellac. Heat and steam loosen a vinyl skin from its board, so peeling always starts next to the oven or over the dishwasher. Once a skin starts lifting, that door gets stripped to bare board or swapped out, since no coating can reattach loose vinyl.
