Shiny factory finishes will accept colour, provided an adhesion primer goes first and the surface remains firmly stuck to its core. Before any thermofoil, melamine or laminate cabinet painting, we inspect each door one by one.
These finishes show up often in North York condo kitchens, basement suites and builder-grade kitchens from the 1990s and 2000s. They are common in rental units near Yonge Street too.
A thermofoil door with its vinyl skin flat and tight can be painted. A door with the skin bubbling, lifting at the edges or peeling at a corner cannot, because paint will not glue a loose skin back down.
Melamine and laminate are harder and more stable. Once scuffed and primed with an adhesion product, they accept cabinet painting nicely, provided water has not puffed up the edges. Chipped edge banding can be repaired before primer.
Heat and steam soften the glue under thermofoil, so the first doors to peel are almost always beside the range, above the kettle and over the dishwasher. We check those doors before we quote anything else.

When too many thermofoil doors have peeled, new MDF doors made to size are the better spend. Those new fronts go through primer and topcoat alongside everything else, while the boxes receive matching cabinet painting.
This mix of new doors and painted boxes costs less than a full new kitchen. It is common in 1990s Willowdale kitchens where the white thermofoil has yellowed and lifted near the stove. The quote shows the cabinet painting price and the new door price on separate lines.
Bonding primer costs more than a standard primer and takes an extra step, so it adds to the cabinet painting price. In Toronto it usually adds about $165 to $440 to a kitchen, depending on the door count.
